Title: Q to U in anthem
Post by: joshd52 on July 10, 2010, 11:09:49 pm
Went there tonight and I have to say it was by far the best bbq from a bbq restaurant in az. I had the pulled pork, pulled chicken and fried mac & cheese all were really good. The owners are great and very friendly for being open less than a month they are doing a super good job as far as I'm concerned. If your up near anthem or just looking for a good place to eat good bbq stp in to Q to U...

Great Feedback Josh.  We are excited to see them up and going as they are the FIRST AZBarbeque members to open their own BBQ Restaurant.  We have members here who have Restaurants, but The Rosol's are the first to be members first, compete, then open one.

Can't wait to get up there and try them out..

We went to see Dave and Karyn yesterday. What a great visit and great food. Had the Hawg Dawg, sweet tater fries, sweet tater tots, fried mac & cheese, cole slaw and a couple PBR's and wine. The food was awesome. We were very impressed with whole setup. They are doing very well and I see great success in the future. Congrats kids!!!!

I heard there's a new BBQ joint in Anthem...   :D

We had to get the kid some new school clothes, so we wound up at Anthem Outlets. Perfect time to suggest a trip to Q to U.
News flash. Hawg Dawg ROCKS!! Man that sucker is good! Cyndi, not a fan of smoked food, had their "hangaberger", and Tiara, being Tiara, had chicken strips. They both seemed to enjoy the French fries--Wait, lemme ask--Tiara brightly said, "They were really good!!"
I had the beans, which were awesome. And I had a can of beer. Dave has some fine brews on the shelf there, like PBR...but I opted for Moose Drool! Just another microbrew to add to my growing list of favorite beers.
Thanks Dave, for the wonderful visit and great food. I give it a rating of 4 cords out of 5!

Stopped in myself a week or so ago and have to say, the experience was great.

Always love seeing the Rosol family and seeing them finally in their own place serving up some great BBQ was incredible.

It is awesome to see someone living their dream.  The Restaurant was outstanding, the pictures around the entire place were great, the food was awesome and of course, the staff rocked it.

Look forward to going back there and enjoying more of their great food & hospitality soon.

If you have not been there, you need to go and try it out...  ;)

My kid played a Freshman Football Game Wednesday night in Anthem at Boulder Creek High School. I don't know if that community is big enough to support two schools, I don't think so. It is a big school and Wednesday, their football program was better than Chaparral's!

Pat, Boulder Creek is the only High School in town.  There are four k-8th grade schools in town and a new Anthem Prep Charter School.  I know several people at all the schools, actually had the BC Baseball coaching staff in our place for a meeting yesterday.  Maybe I can help track your friend down.

David, my buddy and his guests liked the food. I certainly did! :P His only comment was that he can never get too much smoke in his BBQ. So I bought a bottle of liquid smoke as a joke the next time I see him!

KEVIN and DAVID, thanks for the quick response! My friends name is CHAD KURTZMAN- when he taught at cortez he was a biology teacher and guitar teacher. His wife was/is? DIANNE KURTZMAN. We kept in touch for the 1st 10 years after high school 1977-1987, then when we moved up here we lost contact. CHAD went to CORTEZ as a student also with a guy named VINCE FORNIER-? ok MARK who's that guy now?( i probably mispelled the last name) being a musician we use to go to this persons band mates house after school and jam on their instruments! Any clues?-thanks, PAT

Alice Cooper aka Vince Furnier. His band started out as the Spiders. My brother had a band called Pnut Butter way back then in the late sixties and used to play in Battles Of The Bands against Alice. They're still friends.

Speaking of rock n' roll, I went to a Cinderella concert last night at Wild Horse Pass. My niece's boyfriend is Fred Coury- the drummer. We had backstages passes and had a blast...although my ears are still ringing this AM!

The freshmen may have been, but on Friday Chaparral's varsity whooped 'em 48-7. I had to mention it since my son is a Chaparral freshman and my wife is a Firebird, too. ;)

Hey Pat,

Here is a listing a teachers at BC  https://bchs.dvusd.org/Teacher.html  I don't know if it is complete, but I don't see Chad on it.

And YES the Varsity did get Whooped yesterday,  I was working but my Son Ryan went to the game.  He was 5 min late and BC was down 17-0, so it was a social outing for all of his friends.  They are 8th graders, trying to get a sense of BC.

Right now they are the big fish at their school, he plays on the Volleyball team and the baseball team, as do most of his friends.  I try to explain that enjoy it now, as they we be the low man on the totem pole next year.  :D

I was talking to the manager of the Starbucks at Arrowhead mall today, who is from Memphis.  The conversation went towards BBQ, and the first thing out of her mouth was about Q to U in Anthem!  She loves it and says there's no better BBQ in the valley!  Just thought I'd let you know, Dave.

Made the trip Thurs. to try the Q there and it was well worth the 60 mile one way trip. In the future I will be stopping in when traveling I 17. Also the purpose of the trip was to talk to David about some things I'm thinking about. David and Karyn both are very giving people of there time. That is our Hawg Dawg and our pulled pork Nachos.

The Hawg Dawg is a polish, that we stuff with cheese, wrap with two slices of bacon (One was not enough) and deep fry it.  Yumm.  For the nachos, we fry up the chips, because we could not find a commercial chip we likes, then season with our rub and build the BBQ nachos.

Thanks to everyone that made it up yesterday, braving that wild Anthem snow day.  ;D

PS - loved the boots erin.

Made it up again today.  Stopped in for dinner on my way up to Prescott Valley.  Had the Hawg Dawg this time with a side of potato salad.  Another great meal!  Saw Karyn, and she looked busy (Dave wasn't around...maybe that's why).  The customers were steady, which says a lot about the place.  It has to be hard to keep a place open in this economy, so you know they're doing it right up in Anthem!  My only question is...what to try next time I make it up?

If you are eating BBQ, I was there sometime during the day.  I am the set up guy (6 am) and the closer (9 pm), but I do realize that Karyn Handles the back of the house really well and much better than I.  I actually got the kitchen pass today to go to our Son Ryan's School baseball game, but I was back around 7 pm or so.

PS- Ryan's team won 5-2.  Yeah.

See you (I hope) soon

Hey David, I think you should add "pulled pork pita's" to your menu choices ... you could call them Triple P's.

Or if you named them "popular pulled pork pita's" they could be shown as Quad P's on your menu!

I am not really good at reviewing food.  I'll just say my co-worker and I drove three hours (1.5 hours each way) to try Q to U and were extremely happy we made the trip.  We ordered the "Unbutton Your Pants" so we could try a little bit of all the main meats.  There was not one bad thing that was served to us, not even one "average" thing.

My biggest surprise was the chicken thighs and wings.  I don't like chicken.  I've rarely found any that I'll eat.  This was different.  They were tender, moist, smokey and fall off the bone.

I had the baked beans and fries.  The fries were a surprise because they used the rub on them instead of just a season salt.  The baked beans were nicely done too.

We were the only ones dining in at the time, though there were people in and out picking up orders.  David was very social and appreciative of our visit.  Everyone was a bit surprised when we wanted to order the $50 platter for two to dine in but were very friendly.

I'll definitely be returning, perhaps not as much as I'd like due to the distance, but I am won over.  I wish David the best of luck for his business.

Don't forget the trash, I'm in charge of that.

As for the rub and the sauce, it was a lot of trial and error to get to the end result for both of them.  But they were both our creations.

After reading the NUMEROUS posts on how good the food is, the wife and I stopped in Friday evening on our way to the high country. What can I say other than you guys nailed it! Dave and Karen really know their sh!t and cook some fine Q. I had the chicken and briskit combo, and Mrs Otis had a pulled chicken sandwich. The briskit was fork tender and had an incredible flavor. The chicken is excellent too. I only wish I lived closer to spend some more time there.

Dave spent some time talking to us and gave me some good pointers to up my back yard BBQ game. Its really nice to see that. And if I can get my own BBQ up to the quality of Dave & Karen's chow, I'll be a happy camper. Highly Reccomended!!!

Thanks for stopping by, it was great to meet you.  As I told you, hold onto the wallet, as the hobby of BBQ gets fun and expensive when you get into it.   ;D

I read all the positive posts and told myself that I needed to try this place out.  On my way back from training camp in Flagstaff, I stopped in.  Started off trying their fried Mac and Cheese.  That was really good.  But I wasn't done...you can't go into a BBQ place and not try their Q.  Ordered up a pulled pork sandwich.  That too was really good.  Karyn brought out a small sample of their brisket for me to try and oh my...that was delicious!  I am going back up the mountain to camp again later this week.  I am planning on stopping in at Q to U again on my way back.  They really know how to do BBQ.  The only thing that can make this place better...open a location in the East Valley (I know I am dreaming, but it is a good dream).  Thanks again David and Karyn.  You all are great!  Looking forward to talking to you again next weekend.

I'm glad to see so many are in agreement on the food, biggest judges tent I've ever seen! I've got to say please, please don't ever open another location or expand. We've found every single time a successful restaurant expands or opens multiple locations the food quality changes and tends to go to cr@p by getting "generic" and losing that special touch.
Please, please, please keep it small, keep it personal and keep your hands ON the product you do a great job!!!

grizmt,

I don't think you have anything to worry about.  In talking to Dave and Karyn, they are very happy right where they are with no plans to do anything different or expand.

Dave,

I will get a chance to watch our new QB in Flag Thursday and Friday.  I will stop in Saturday on my way home and give you all an update as to whether Eagles can fly in AZ :-)

See you all in a few days!

Stopped in at Q to U again yesterday afternoon on my way home from Flagstaff (training camp).  This time, had a combo plate with ribs and brisket.  Both meats were extremely good.  I just have chicken left to try on the BBQ meat side.  I can only imagine that it is as good as the rest has been.  I did get an order of the Bread Pudding to go.  Took it home and nuked it in the microwave for about 45 seconds or so.  Heated the caramel up too and the poured it over.  WOW!!!!  That was some of the best bread pudding I have had in a long time.  Thanks Karyn!  I hope to swing by again soon and that will definitely be on my order again.

Stopped by with Tom (Whiskey Ranch) on Saturday, right before I judged at Rock Springs Cafe, first time there and really impressed with the place.  Had a taste of their, artery killer, Hawg Dawg.  A dog stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon and deep fried.  WOW a lot of flavor.  The place is just to far to go there often but will be back. Nice place and people hpe they make it....

Stop by last week food was great and the staff was very polite and helpful.  I have been looking for a good bbq restaurant in the valley for a long time finally found one.  A little far from my neck of the woods but defiantly worth the drive

David & Karyn, thanks for having us out today and answering questions and showing everyone your place.

As always, it was great stopping in there.  It always feels like home walking in there.  I love all the pictures from past comps and always enjoy talking with you both about BBQ & life in general.

Hope to get back in there more.

If you have not yet tried Q to U, you really need to put it on your calendar and get out there.  Food & staff are incredible..  ;)

Top End Competition BBQ in a Restaurant..  Great Stuff!!

See you soon,

David

You are correct, it took us no time at all.  22 minutes from 7th Ave & I10 to you.  Traffic flowed very well..

I love the updated Freeway..

Once again, David & Karyn came through.  I sent one of my colleagues and his family to Q to U last night while they were up in Anthem doing some shopping.  The message that I got last night from him was "And DANG that was some good BBQ!!!!".  I talked to him in greater depth this morning and he stated that everything was absolutely delicious.  They will definitely be going back he says.  I asked him to bring me back some bread pudding...he told me he left it at home this morning :-(  He is suppose to be bringing it in after lunch today...he better!  Otherwise, I am going to have to make a trip up north.  Personally, I think he just ate it and doesn't want to admit to it...I wouldn't blame him if he did.

Hey James,

thanks for sending them in, we appreciate it.  I know they left with 2 bread puddings, so there is a good chance you will end up with one.

Scott, let me know when you are planning to come.  Love to wish you good luck on your next venture.

Man, I've been away too long!  I meant to post this a long time ago.  I finally made it up to Q to U a couple of months ago because I had been dying to try them out.  All I have to say is they were the best ribs I've ever had in a restaurant.  Ever.  And don't even get me started on the Smoke-Fried wings!  Thankfully I got my order to go, or I would have kept ordering all day!  It was very cool meeting David and talking for a few, and checking out his Boo Bash GC trophy.  I've been dropping your name every time I hear anyone talk about wanting to go out for BBQ, so hopefully some of them have made it out to your place.  I'll definitely be back!

PS - Thanks for spreading the word, we appreciate it very much.

Met a Prescott friend for lunch today at Q-to-U. 30 miles for me and 70 for him. I got there in a half-hour from the NE Valley.

As always, David & Karyn did a fabulous job. My buddy was lamenting about the lack of good BBQ in Prescott and now he has a place worth heading down the hill for! We did the "Loosen Your Belt" sampler and it just proved why Toys 4 BBQ'N is such a consistent winner on the BBQ circuit. :P Everything in the restaurant is competition quality BBQ. If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Plus, you can always hit the Outlets at Anthem on the way out...biggest outlet mall in the state.

Thanks Mark for Stopping in.  Good to see you again and talk BBQ and Kamado's.  Even though mine has a broken damper.

I'm Glad you enjoyed the meal and we look forward to seeing you guys again.

Just an FYI, the Hop's and Tannins store next to me does a brewing the first Saturday of the month??  Maybe another reason to come back to Anthem, as I know you love your beer.

I checked out that store. Great selection of brewing equipment and ingredients; as good as any I've seen across the Valley. Making your own homebrew is a kick, especially when you do it at a place that's fully equipped. That could make for a fun summertime club event. Brew & BBQ! ^-^

Stopped in with a friend at lunch today for my quarterly pilgrimage.  He took a fork a stabbed a rib to grab it off the plate and was amazed the meat was on the fork but bone stayed on the plate.  The ribs were THAT tender.

I enjoy going in and ordering a Unbutton Your Pants and watching other customers look at us like we are Adam Richmond from Man vs Food.
