Title: Kinfolk's BBQ
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on April 28, 2006, 06:54:16 pm
Met up with Bear, Dave (thegig) and a new fella we met named Rudy at Kinfolks today for lunch.

Kinfolks is located at 7919 E. Thomas Rd. in Scottsdale, AZ.  It is on the SW corner of Thomas & Hayden 480-947-6440.  The owner's name is Ivan (??)

It was a great day for BBQ.  Just driving up to Kinfolks, you could smell the BBQ.  I got there early and talked with Ivan.  He told me he mixes his mesquite and hickory woods together to get that great smell, and it was fantastic.

While waiting, I ordered up one of their appetizer sampler plates and just as everyone got there, it arrived.  Fried Mushrooms, onion rings & Jalepano poppers.  It was all great.

I ordered up their super sampler platter for lunch so that I could get a taste of a variety of their BBQ.  It came with Pulled Pork, Pulled Chicken, Pulled beef and Beef ribs along with a side of beans and corn on the cobb.  Truely a feast fit for a King.  I couldn't get through it all, but it was very good.  The pork was perfect as was the beef and the ribs.  The chicken was a bit dry, but it still tasted great.

It was refreshing to see them bring a side of BBQ sauce rather than pour it on prior to serving it.  This way I got to taste the true food and not just the sauce.  I did add a bit of the great sauce, but just to enhance the flavor a bit.

The drinks they serve there come in large mason jars, so it keeps your thirst quenched for a while and it was a neat concept.

Kinfolks is a great place to go for lunch, they were packed today and after talking with Ivan, he said it is like that every day.  They also have a great take out catering menu with very reasonable prices, so if you are looking for a great lunch to bring into the office or to have at one of your events, this would be a great place to try.

Dave (thegig) had "The Pig" which was 3/4 lb of their great pulled pork on a sandwich bun.  He said he really enjoyed it.

Rudy had their sausage link sandwich and it was very hearty and from what Rudy said, it was very tasty.

Bear had the beef ribs, I will let him post his thoughts on those as well as the experience we had at Kinfolks.

It is a very friendly atmosphere there, they greeted everyone who came in so that everyone felt welcome.  If you do stop by, make sure to say "Hello" to Ivan.

I was satisfied. I had the pork spare ribs with the slaw and beans. But before putting the cart before the horse....The onion rings..I like onion rings, strings, blossoms etc. if they are done right. Many many places just screw them up. Either over cooked, or batter is greasy, or too much batter. These moe clumps of onion strings than rings. I am guessin they are made there. The onions we're cooked just right, and the batter was light, but well seasoned and crisp. Most onion rings I may eat one or 2 and end up throwing them out. These we're right on.
The ribs on the tip was a we bit dry, but most was moist and pulled away from the bone. The had a flavorful dry rub. I am guessin he does them without foiling, and dry. Which is the way I prefer to cook mine. I will mop at end of a cook, but I dig on dry ribs. The cole slaw was fresh. The veggies were crisp and sauce was pretty good. I like slaw with a bit of a vinegar bite to em, but I enjoyed Ivan's slaw. The beans we're also good. More of a southwestern spice to them instead of the ol sweet as hell doctored up bush's baked beans.
A slice of cornbread was also served. It too was good. Moist and with flavor. Again Ivan did what was good and not what was mainstream. I am not a fan of northern style cornbread which is with lots of sugar for too sweet a cornbread. I prefer the southern stlye, being more savory and balancing the sweet with honey and butter, which he has at the table!!
If I had anything to complain about, it is that there was no greens on the menu. Some collards would have really rounded out the meal.
I definately will return and recommend it.

My Daughter Rochelle (Brat) and I met up with Ryan (Devil Daddy) and Dave (The Gig) over here for lunch again today.

Had the Sausage Links sandwich and it was fantastic.  Ryan had the Sampler, Dave had the Pig sandwich and my Daughter Rochelle had the Ribs.  It all came out fantastic and we were all very full after lunch.

Great place to go, Ivan is a great host and the atmosphere there is fun.  ;)

Just met Aaron at Kinfolks for lunch again today.

Great BBQ Resturant, Ivan really has some great food.  Very moist and tasty.

I had the Super Sampler today, Pulled Pork, Chicken & Brisket along with half a rack of ribs and 2 sides (Spicy Fries & Potato Salad).

Great meal.

If you get a chance, try out Kinfolks.  It is located on the Southwest Corner of Hayden & Thomas and is behind the Shell Gas Station.

Tell him Mike from AZBarbeque referred you.

Enjoy!!!

I love Kinfolk! When I went there the first time, I ordered a large BBQ sandwich because I was pretty hungry.  :o Was I in for a shocker! It was a serving size large enough for a skinny family of 4. The warm BBQ sauce really got me sucked in and now I am hooked. I can't wait to go back!

Don't skip the skookie at Kinfolk's.  It's one of the best skillet chocolate chip cookies on the planet.

I have to agree about the onion rings! That is why I had room for my sandwich. We could have just eaten that giant loaf of onion rings with their BBQ sauce. That sauce was so good, I could drink it!  >:D

I just went to Kinfolk's again last night. I had the "Baker" (a jumbo baked potato) stuffed with pulled pork! It was AMAZING!  :) Lee got the sampler; it looked like 2 lbs. meat! Insane! Kinfolk's never lets us down!

If you leave Kinfolks Hungry, then you have issues.  His portions are huge and the food is always incredible.

Glad you enjoyed your meal, we will have to meet there for lunch or dinner some time.  ;)

I forgot to mention: We had no room for dessert, but I really wanted to try the peach cobbler. So, we ordered it to go and they threw it in on the house! We had it for breakfast in the morning, and it was de-lish!

Eaten here quite a few times.  I work right up the street from this place, and Ivan's brother works for one of the other managers in our office.  I loved the pork and the corn bread is done just right.  The mason jars really give the place a touch of old school.

Mike we will have to meet up for lunch some day there.

Lee and I went there the other day and Lee got the insane meat combo platter and we shared it. I could just drink the sauce. So damn good, and the sides are so damn good too! I had the potato salad and gumbo. The gumbo was INSANELY fabulous! It should be illegal to go there! I think it is the best BBQ I've had........... seriously!
