Grumpy Jake's BBQ

We finally stopped in tried Grumpy Jake's in Wagon Wheel (between Show Low and Lakeside). the beef, pork and chicken sampler plates we're ordered as well as a 1/2 slab of ribs. French fries, cheesy taters, tater salad, slaw and beans we're the sides.
We never got the cornbread that was supposed to come with the meal, so no review there. We we're very disappointed with the food. First 2 beers that came we're stale in the bottle, they had a strong metallic taste...bad start. The sampler plates we're very small for the price. The chicken, pork and beef (not sure what cut of beef) we're fine chopped, probably in a food processor. The only flavor there was salt...couldn't taste any rub, smoke, finish and no distinguisable flavor difference between the meats, even though from different animals. The 1/2 slab of ribs we're approx 3"x8"...smallest ribs I have ever seen anywhere. The fries we're cold and soggy, the cheesy potatoes (baked) we're cold and raw, the rest was bland, except for the salt. The beans we're the canned ranch beans, which I like so those we're good.
In all it was very disappointing, especially that this is what locals and vacationers are being taught what BBQ is.
Those in the White Mountains looking for good BBQ....take the drive out to concho hwy and go see Stavin Marvin's on Sundays. I know the Youngs can cook.

Been there twice, both times were disappointing.  Needless to say I'll be happily driving right on by Grumpy Jakes from now on.

It was a lot better when it was Cowboy Cooking. It was always packed then. The only problem was that the owner only opened when he felt like it. (A lot of "Gone Hunting" signs.)

Waldo's ( http://www.waldosbbq.com/ )has opened a branch up here. (Behind the KFC in Show Low) I tried it when it first opened, but thought is was a bit heavy on the mesquite smoke (Great sauce though). I might have to try it again.

Then there was this guy (A BBQ rock star really) who had a smoker setup on weekends at Bare Tree Furniture. That was the Primo stuff!! Too bad I couldn't stop by as much as I wanted too.

Sounds like you met our very own Bear.  Great guy and one of the best BBQers I know.  Always love cooking with him and his wife Cindy, not only is their food fantastic, but they are some of the greatest people you will ever meet.

Was at a chili cookoff last weekend and Dave (Bear Bonz) saw my AZBarbeque sticker and introduced himself. We had a nice visit and he entered the contest and did pretty good with chili but won first place with his brisket.  Now I have to qualify his win.  There where 3 entrants, I judged, and could tell just by looking which one was his and knew it was a winner (he did well with a flat cut).  But hey a win is a win and great that it happened to a nice guy.  I finished 4th, out of 17 cooks, in competion chili, 2nd in spam (yuk) and 1st in show.  A lot of fun and greeeeeat weather.
