Title: Cheesesteak
Post by: jrod667 on July 27, 2010, 11:34:50 pm
Okay, I know that this isn't really BBQ, but its meat and dang good. So, I thought I'd pass it on. I spent probably 3 solid months hitting up every place I drove by, heard word of mouth on, or googled that claimed to have great cheesesteaks. From Uncle Sams in Phoenix to Corleone's in Tempe to some place by Fiesta Mall in Mesa to Charlie's at Stapley and US 60 to some place in San Tan Mall to name a few. I ate A LOT of cheesesteaks. By far, the closest thing to what I remember back east is at:

The Philadelphia Sandwich Company in old town Scottsdale (like Scottsdale Road and 5th). The key ingredient: Their Bread! It has a great crust and the meat doesn't penetrate it and make it super soggy. A Couple of places had the meat right, but this place was the only place with the right meat AND bread.

My suggestion: Cheesesteak with Mushrooms and Onions and extra white American cheese. Tell them to mix the cheese in with the everything, and its great. You may substitute the American cheese with Cheezwiz if you prefer. Also, it's open 24/7. Simply awesome.

I apologize in advance if posting this is considered BBQ sacrilege.

Dean--or someone--sometime back started to hit up restaurants, to pick the best of. They started with best of green chili burgers, and they hit several restaurants. I don't remember what happened next. Maybe you guys should pick up the mantle!

Yea, it died out after the Green Chili Burgers, but Cheesesteaks were next on our list.

I will certainly have to stop by there and try that one out..

Right up there with an authentic Philly Cheesesteak is Chicago's Italian Beef sammich. The pinnacle of it to many Windy City residents is Al's Beef. They just opened up a location in the Scottsdale Airpark.

THANK YOU! I've rarely found a cheesesteak like the ones I got around Philly and I miss 'em. Gotta hit these places for sure.

There used to be a Philly cheesesteak joint at 32nd St & Camelback that carried them. It is long gone, but I bet some of the other Philly places in AZ carry them. You can get them online: http://www.tastykake.com/Default.aspx

Here's a blog about them: http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bella/2007/05/mmm_tastykakes.php

And here's a link to the cheesesteak joint that started the conversation:

I still say, the Philly boys at Corleone's on Mill street in Tempe has every other cheese steak place put to shame, hands down. They are from the East side, lived on grew up on and learned from the originals back in philly. THey keep to the traditionals and it's the only place I've been to that you can walk up to the counter ask for what you want like you were in philly, and they know what you want.

There were four cheesesteak joints on mill before they showed up, and they are the last one standing, That says something.

( ever notice that every type of sandwichable food is a manfood? BBQ....Cheesesteak, sausages.....)

Stop there tonight on the way home from work. Cheesesteak was good, owner and help were very friendly. Don't understand what the benefit of shipping the meat in from Philly, other than an added expense. Beef is available here in Arizona. And the bottom line to it all was a very good cheesesteak was devoured my myself. Well worth the stop.

I'd say the best Luke's is in Tucson. That's the father that started it all. Next would be the one at 16th street and Indian School, and then the Scottsdale location. And then again we're not talking about cheesesteaks. Luke's is Italian Beef, Polish, and Hot Dogs.

The last time I ate at Luke's at the Airpark there were dead roaches in the hallway by the bathroom. My son was grossed out. I pointed out that he should be more concerned it they were alive. It didn't convince him. ;)

Al's Beef is close by. It's revered in Chicago, but I haven't tried them out yet.

I wasn't that impressed with the Scottsdale venue. Felt they were just cashing in on the name. But, I can even drive passed Tucson without hitting the original Luke's.

There's a new place called Gino's at 32nd St and Thunderbird that looks pretty good.  There's a lot on the menu and the cheesesteaks look real.  I keep meaning to try it and just haven't gotten around to it.
