Title: Best Authentic Mexican Restaurant
Post by: Mike (AZBarbeque) on November 01, 2009, 05:33:52 pm
Hey all, we have a few judges flying in for the Sun City Festival cook-off and they have asked me to recommend a good Authentic Mexican Restaurant they can go to while they are out here.

What's everyone's suggestions??

Have them try Las Cazueles.  It's actually close to the event.

ANY-Berto's. Carolina's is good, too. Great fresh tortillas there.

I'm a fan of Carolinas. Los Dos Molinos is good, too. Plus, I like the food courts in any of the Ranch Markets.

I was thinking Carolina's also. The best tortillas. Anywhere.
I've heard that Los Dos Molinas is pretty good, and they serve some hot food. I need to step it up. The 2 habs & 2 serranos weren't enough for me in my chili..

La Parilla Suiza.  ;D
Title: Re: Best Authentic Mexican Restaurant
Post by: AzJohnnyC on November 02, 2009, 03:03:40 pm
That's correct, Smitty. I'm not sure I'd rate their food as top notch, last time I ate there, it was rather mediocre. And Tee Pee is ok, but not the greatest, but if it's ok for W, the former President, it must be decent.
Title: Re: Best Authentic Mexican Restaurant
Post by: Mark on November 02, 2009, 03:43:33 pm
A lot of long-time residents like the TeePee. It never did a lot for me. La Parilla Suiza (the Swiss Grill) is good, but different. It's out of Mexico City. I believe the name was derived from their dishes of broiled, melted cheese, much like a Swiss fondue. It is mighty tasty stuff with their mesquite-grilled green onions (cebollitas al carbon) and fresh tortillas to fold it all up in. :P

For nostalgia, I head over to Los Olivos in Scottsdale, still pretty good, but old style Mex with lots of cheese and sauce.  Los Sombreros, also in South Scottsdale (North Tempe?) Is excellent.

Two good choices!

My best local Mexican food memories are from the 50's. My family would go to a little dive at Central & Buckeye called the El Rey Cafe. I still dream of their tacos! It's long gone. I think it's now part of a parking lot for St. Anthony's Church.

I grew up near the original Garcia's at 35th Avenue & McDowell. It was a hole-in-the-wall. The bigger one at 35th Ave. & Encanto was built much later by the Garcia family after their non-compete ran out with Famous Restaurants, Inc.-- the company that bought them. Then the Garcia kids opened up Julio G's-- named after their father. The parents did very well in the sale, seen tooling around in his & her Rolls. 8)

It's easy to discount Garcia's and Macayo's as merely big chains, but both are still using most of their same old family recipes from when they were Mom & Pops. I know. I ate there then...and occasionally now. (I work across the street from the original Woody's Macayo on Central, south of Indian School)

All this talk has made me hungry! I may have to head to La Fonda-- a pretty good AZ-style mom & pop at Scottsdale & Shea.

My stepson works at Julio G's at P.V. Mall. Not bad food there. I'll suggest not to go to El Torito. For reasons I won't in into, just trust me. I'll never eat at a Church's Chicken either. I'll pass that wisdom onto you, my friends. Trust me.

If you're looking for something near the Competion (and Holiday Inn).  I second Crash's recommendation of Las Cazueles on Dysart between Grand Ave and Bell Rd.  It's not much in the way of ambiance and atmosphere.  Very little decor, just tables and chairs with a bar and a kitchen in the back.   However the food is very good, authentic, and the menu features a lot of Mexican seafood dishes that you don't find at most mexican restaurants.

Looks like I need to try Nino's on Grand.   Thanks for the tip.

A place that's kinda quick Mex and not too far from the comp. site is Mixteca @ 67th Ave/Bell.  It's not really 'authentic' per se but every dish I've had has been very solid-flavorful, and their salsa bar is quite good too.  Carolina's machaca (and as previously mentioned their tortillas) are tough to beat Cave Creek/Cactus.
Dumpy Mexican, Las Glorias gets my vote @ Northern/19th Ave.
For a neat experience head to Tradiciones @ Roosevelt/16th St next to the Ranch Market.  This is always someplace we take out of towners, great patio for sippin' cervezas or margaritas :)  The food is spot on as well.

Some people won't agree with the quality but the closest mexican food place to the comp is going to be Macayo's.  I like it, growing up here in Az it is always pretty good and I have never gotten sick.  Bell and Reems 10 minutes from festival.

That particular Macayo's is a good call due to proximity and representation of AZ-Mex Sonoran-style chow.

Man, Have I got my work cut out for me or what?! BbQ, authentic Mexcian, and a cowboy steak cookout :P
Carolinas for sure, it all starts with the tortilla. Las Cazueles, at least twice, and I love dumpy Mexican dive joints so, I must try Las Glorias.
We'll also be spending some time in Sedona, what would the experts recommend as a can't miss restaurant .

Which is good, saves me money and calories by not eating the "genuine" stuff.
Title: Re: Best Authentic Mexican Restaurant
Post by: Mark on November 05, 2009, 06:17:09 pm
Heck, you gotta admit each regional style is "genuine" to the locals. It's easy to break the styles out as represented by their locally-based chains. Cal-Mex has El Torito, Taco Bell and Del Taco as its representatives; AZ-Mex has Macayo's, Garcia's and Any-berto's;  and Tex-Mex has On The Border and Pancho's. Texas is also home to Chili's, Macaroni Grill, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Pizza Hut, T.G.I.Friday's, 7-Eleven, Whataburger, Bennigan's, Cici's, Chuck E. Cheese, Tony Roma's, Fuddrucker's, Schlotzky's and more.

New Mexico has no big chains, but distinctively good food. We thank them for that...and for separating us from Texas. ;)

There's also a Rio Mirage on Litchfield and Bell.

BUT..If you're going to be near union hills and 7th avenue, then you also have to stop by Chino Bandidos on 19th Avenue and Greenway.  It's not traditional mexican food, but this place is legendary with the locals and was also featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.  I no longer work in the area, but we still make regular Chino runs at least once every couple of months.

If there's lettuce and cheese on your taco... It's not authentic.

I agree about Chino's! It's not authentic, but it's a must for me when I've got company from out of town. I'm a Chino finatic. 8B 9Q with black beans and white rice is my usual. The emerald chicken is a hit with the first-timers who like a mild dish.

I've got Chino on speed dial. Makes it easier to phone in an order when picking it up on the way home. I've seen numbers in there. After the DDD episode, even the back room was packed. And they were waiting for orders. It was crazy. I've never seen them so busy. I've been to the other location in Chandler a few times too.

Didn't they have a location years ago around 39th Ave. & Thomas? I swear I ate there a good 25 years ago. Also, I thought there was a place by the same name in Payson or somewhere.

Not a Chino Bandido. The 19th Ave and Greenway location is the original. For those of you in the east valley who haven't yet had the experience, there's a second location at Dobson and Chandler that's been open a few years.

Los Favritos is a favrito of mine.  I usually stop off at the one on Chandler Blvd and the 101.  Love the Carne Asada burrito!

Of course, for killer pork tacos, it is hard to beat Guedo's in Downtown Chandler.

In Tucson, there is a taco stand on Grant called Molcas, about 5 minutes east of the I-10.  Some of the best Carne Asada you are likely to have.  The tortillas are to die for.   I think they have a restaurant also in Tucson down in the barrio area.

What about Carlos O'briens, isn't it authentic to Phoenix?
Title: Re: Best Authentic Mexican Restaurant
Post by: Mark on November 06, 2009, 08:54:31 am
Yeah. Carlos O'Brien's is quite representative of the Arizonan-Sonoran style. Things like cheese crisps (not quesadillas), chimichangas, and hot sauce (not salsa) define it. Free chips & hot sauce when you sit down is a birthright too. I swear I never even had the chunky tomato stuff (like Pace) until I was about 15. I'm still not much of a fan of it. I think Carolinas makes the quintessential AZ-Mex hot sauce. I buy it by the pint every time I get a dozen hot-off-the-grill flour tortillas. :P Their menudo (only sold on Sat.) is the best in town IMHO.

D'ya mean the Chinese/Mexican place that used to be on Indian School just E of Grand by any chance? I remember seeing that, and I think I ate there once when I first visited Phx in the mid 80s, shortly before moving here.

Theres a little taco stand at Camelback and 27th, Taco Mex or sumpin, has carnitas 'street' tacos for 89 cents. Really good stuff. I believe they have all the tongue, tripe and other 'yukky' stuff there too. And Burger Factory, too. Don't they serve "all that" stuff too?

I like beef tongue. It's a muscle, not an organ meat, so it's more like eating chicken gizzards rather than chicken liver. (both of which I like) Tacos de cesas is the one I haven't tried. Beef brains.

By the way, There's a dumpy Chinese buffet at 15th Ave & Indian School that serves both Chinese and Mexican food. I used to go there about once a week and start off with a bowl of menudo before moving on to the stir-frys.

Then you probably wouldn't like tripas de leche (aka udder gut). It's the internal plumbing of a dairy cow. These straw-sized tubes of tripas grill into something akin to Slim Jims. Chewy, but actually not too bad. :-\

Growing up in Tucson I found that northern Sonoran cooking made a signature flavor that is indigenous to Tucson. I can't explain the difference, but there is one...aside from the obvious carne seca which I never found anywhere else. Anyway that style of Sonoran cooking has always been comfort food. There are several places in south Tucson and of course el charro downtown. My favorite of all has to be Mi Nidito on south 4th ave.

Two very good places, Bear... and both well represent the style of Sonoran Mexican food of Tucson. Also I like grabbing a green chile burro made by the Native American grandmothers outside San Xavier del Bac. On Sundays, they set up lean-to's in the dirt lot of the Mission and handmake tortillas on a sheet of tin heated by a mesquite fire. Some of the best eating anywhere. Worth the drive from Phoenix.
