Hey all, we have a few judges flying in for the Sun City Festival cook-off and they have asked me to recommend a good Authentic Mexican Restaurant they can go to while they are out here.

What's everyone's suggestions??

If God wanted us to be Vegetarians, why did he make animals out of meat??

Have them try Las Cazueles.  It's actually close to the event.

ANY-Berto's. Carolina's is good, too. Great fresh tortillas there.

I'm a fan of Carolinas. Los Dos Molinos is good, too. Plus, I like the food courts in any of the Ranch Markets.

I was thinking Carolina's also. The best tortillas. Anywhere.
I've heard that Los Dos Molinas is pretty good, and they serve some hot food. I need to step it up. The 2 habs & 2 serranos weren't enough for me in my chili..

For cooking, lower and slower. For spices, mo' hotter, mo' better. Habaneros rule!

Oh, wow! I've eaten there! I seem to remember thinking, "Wow. That was good!" But it would have been about 4-6 years ago...

Im not sure of the spelling but I like La Prilla Suza. I wish Richardsons was open again!!!! Although it's not "Traditional"  and more of a new mexican style it is still a great resturaunt! Oh yeah, there is always Teepee's

That's correct, Smitty. I'm not sure I'd rate their food as top notch, last time I ate there, it was rather mediocre. And Tee Pee is ok, but not the greatest, but if it's ok for W, the former President, it must be decent.

A lot of long-time residents like the TeePee. It never did a lot for me. La Parilla Suiza (the Swiss Grill) is good, but different. It's out of Mexico City. I believe the name was derived from their dishes of broiled, melted cheese, much like a Swiss fondue. It is mighty tasty stuff with their mesquite-grilled green onions (cebollitas al carbon) and fresh tortillas to fold it all up in. :P

For nostalgia, I head over to Los Olivos in Scottsdale, still pretty good, but old style Mex with lots of cheese and sauce.  Los Sombreros, also in South Scottsdale (North Tempe?) Is excellent.

Two good choices!

My best local Mexican food memories are from the 50's. My family would go to a little dive at Central & Buckeye called the El Rey Cafe. I still dream of their tacos! It's long gone. I think it's now part of a parking lot for St. Anthony's Church.

I grew up near the original Garcia's at 35th Avenue & McDowell. It was a hole-in-the-wall. The bigger one at 35th Ave. & Encanto was built much later by the Garcia family after their non-compete ran out with Famous Restaurants, Inc.-- the company that bought them. Then the Garcia kids opened up Julio G's-- named after their father. The parents did very well in the sale, seen tooling around in his & her Rolls. 8)

It's easy to discount Garcia's and Macayo's as merely big chains, but both are still using most of their same old family recipes from when they were Mom & Pops. I know. I ate there then...and occasionally now. (I work across the street from the original Woody's Macayo on Central, south of Indian School)

All this talk has made me hungry! I may have to head to La Fonda-- a pretty good AZ-style mom & pop at Scottsdale & Shea.
