Some people won't agree with the quality but the closest mexican food place to the comp is going to be Macayo's.  I like it, growing up here in Az it is always pretty good and I have never gotten sick.  Bell and Reems 10 minutes from festival.
...at 95 MPH.
sorry. Seemed like forever!!

I timed it on the way back from quail hunting on Sunday took 12 minutes at most going down Bell rd.  I live right there at Bell and Reems.  I went in to check out where we were going to be at and then we timed it back to the house.

OK FINE!

:D
Sorry. Somewhere I got the idea that it was 25 miles out. And last year, it seemed like it. Of course, getting to Surprise from even Peoria always seemed like 25 miles itself. Maybe that 'splains it. Thank Q for correcting me. Bah.

No offense, RangerJurena. But here in the Southwest, we favor genuine Sonoran-style Mexican food, not food from "back east."  ;) 8)

Which is good, saves me money and calories by not eating the "genuine" stuff.

Heck, you gotta admit each regional style is "genuine" to the locals. It's easy to break the styles out as represented by their locally-based chains. Cal-Mex has El Torito, Taco Bell and Del Taco as its representatives; AZ-Mex has Macayo's, Garcia's and Any-berto's;  and Tex-Mex has On The Border and Pancho's. Texas is also home to Chili's, Macaroni Grill, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Pizza Hut, T.G.I.Friday's, 7-Eleven, Whataburger, Bennigan's, Cici's, Chuck E. Cheese, Tony Roma's, Fuddrucker's, Schlotzky's and more.

New Mexico has no big chains, but distinctively good food. We thank them for that...and for separating us from Texas. ;)

There's also a Rio Mirage on Litchfield and Bell.

BUT..If you're going to be near union hills and 7th avenue, then you also have to stop by Chino Bandidos on 19th Avenue and Greenway.  It's not traditional mexican food, but this place is legendary with the locals and was also featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.  I no longer work in the area, but we still make regular Chino runs at least once every couple of months.

If there's lettuce and cheese on your taco... It's not authentic.
