Looks like a great stop. How'd you pick Blacks out of the crowd? Lockhart and area has more historical BBQ joints than Westcor has shoe stores! Did you make it to Smitty's or Kreutz'? You weren't far from the famed Salt Lick, either...decisions...

Picked Black's because it's the oldest and still owned by the Black family. I couldn't eat anymore after the first stop, so I'll have to go back. DAMN

Terrific photos, Mark. You've been to one of the holy grails of BBQ. I just love seeing the patina of decades of smoke on the bricks and grills. :P You can't fake that with a thermostat-controlled, stainless steel modern wonder. :-\ Congrats on making the pilgrimmage!

I've always said, if I'm within 200 miles of Kansas City, I'm going to Authur Bryant's. I guess I'm going to have to add Lockhart TX. to that list.

I hate to say it, but I've been to Arthur Bryant's. Don't waste your time. The burnt ends were like rubber erasers. I went to visit the Royal, strolled around for a few hours, then went to Bryant's. I don't think my expectations were too high. It just wasn't very good. Hombre is from KC and told me that I would have been better off going to Interstate BBQ. KC is a good food town, though. They have a great fried chicken joint called Stroud's. I got my wife a cool t-shirt that says "We choke our own chickens." She won't wear it out in public. ::)  http://www.stroudsrestaurant.com/

Mark, I grew up with Bryants, and I've never had the burnt ends. When I go it's either the pork or beef sandwich and fries. Also, if you go to Bryants, you have to go to the one on Brooklyn at 17th street. There are a couple of other Bryants around Kansas City that SUCK.
