When using my Brinkman I converted to a reverse flow the first time I got ash bound on a long rib smoke, I called a friend who uses them all the time, and he said it's a common problem, so I designed a 2 piece replacement grate that fits through the charcoal door opening, ans sits on the lip at each end of the firebox to keep it leval. It puts the bottom of the grate right at the height of the top of the firebox vents. Airflow is no longer blocked from ash, ash can be removed through vent door with charcoal grate loaded. I made a second for my buddy, and he said it worked wonders for his Brinkman the other night to regulate heat in his regular brinkman crossflow. I ran mine for 6 hours yesterday, and did not have to clear ash from the firebox once. I made the grates from 3/8 rod, 1/8 flatbar and angle, and 9 gauge by 3/4 mesh. Will last forever. Anybody wants a set I can make more for $40 a set plus shipping
