Title: Don't try this at home!
Post by: Anthony Spices on August 11, 2009, 11:17:16 am
Ok...so I was going through one of my old backup CD's from my company, Anthony Spices.  I came across a picture I took of when I first started experimenting with roasting the peppers used for my chili pepper based seasonings.  This had to have been about 8 years ago.  The funny part is that, at the time, I was a serious novice at this type of thing and had no idea what I was doing.  As you can see from the picture, I gave a try at roasting habaneros.  Not a good idea.  I did not realize that the peppers will swell up with heat and the pressure builds up inside of it.  Well, stupid me, I was just standing there not paying attention to the now double in size habanero peppers, when one burst open!  The juices from it hit the side of my face, on the cheek luckily.  But my face swelled up like I was hit with a baseball bat.  Lesson be learned, let the professionals do the roasting of habaneros.  I never attempted this again.   ::)

I recently baked potatoes in a hot Kamado, but didn't pierce them to let steam escape. One tater blew up like a firecracker when I picked it up with tongs. Never had that happen before!  ???

Oh, here is another one.  This again was about 7 years ago when I am thinking I am getting the hang of dehydrating and grinding habaneros.  I was grinding, being carefull to make sure I had a gas mask on when it hit me.  The serious burning sensation in one of my eyes.  I knew right away that I got some habanero powder in my eye.  Well, on the way to the kitchen to wash my eye out, my other eye decided to get some powder in it as well.  Now I am blind and the only one at the house (the wife was out at the time).  I washed my eyes with water,..nothing.  I felt my way to the fridge and got a gallon of milk.  The milk counteracts the capsaicin right?  Sure it does!  So I grab the 50 degree gallon of milk and start rinsing my eyes with milk.  By the way, not a good idea either...it is extremely cold on the face.  Finally after about an hour I could open my eyes again.  A few days later I developed an infection in my one eyelid.  I had to go to the eye doctor.  When I told her the story of the milk, she honestly said that in the 20 years of her practice, this is the first time she had ever heard of someone using milk in their eyes to wash them out, I believed her.

That sounded bad... I'm not laughing at you almost going blind, but at the story... Glad you are ok... I once handled a bunch of jalapenos prepping for a big BBQ and about an hour later my hands went numb. Not realizing that the Jalapenos would do that I thought there was something seriously wrong with me... Not a fun experience! It's all about gloves with me and peppers from now on!

Ok...last one!  This one is especially for the guys.  Make sure you use gloves when handling peppers!  I found out the hard way that it is not a good idea to have handled XXX Hatch peppers all day peeling off the roasted skins, and then go to the bathroom.  "Little" Anthony burned for about an hour or two.  By the way, washing hands does not help.   ???

No - you just need to soak it in cider.  ;)

I guess in that case, some plastic gloves for home use would be a wise investment. I know when I handle peppers, I treat my hands like they have toxic waste on them, and I try not to touch anything. Once I touched a doorknob after handling peppers, and the next day it must have still had residue on it because I touched it, then my face, and it burned.

That is way too funny, my wife cleans Jalapenos for alot of her dishes and all too often finds that even if she washes her hands very good, it still can leave traces of oils. So she will find out later when she rubs her eyes. But to have the oils of one of the hottest peppers on the planet......

My wife and I were invited to a dinner at a friends house a few years back, we were supposed to have homemade pizza on the grill.  When we showed up, my friend Bob was leaning over the kitchen sink with bright red eyes and tears flowing freely.  I looked over to the counter and saw his blender wrapped in multiple layers of saran wrap.  Inside was ground up dried peppers, seems he decided to make fresh dried pepper flakes to put on our pizza and discovered when he popped the top of the blender it would have been a better idea to do it outside with the wind blowwing well away from his face!!  The funniest part was his wife's reaction as she could not stop laughing at his stupidity as he actually sniffed to see how hot the peppers were!!

PS: The saran wrap was to keep the rest of the flying dust from escaping!

Son #2. Robbie (who came to the Christmas Party and Tempe) choked and coughed eating a hab slice the size of a fingernail clipping, shot some juice in his eye cutting said hab, then a week later, tested his step moms pepper spray, thinking it wouldn't be as bad. Rats, I wasn't there for that one!

YEARS Ago, my wife and i were processing HATCH green chili's, We tossed about a 5 gallon bucket of stems and seads into the pig pen! We didn't think anything of it since they were green chili's, but our 5oo lb boar ate the whole bucket by himself! He didn't move for three days, just laid on his side with the saddest look on his face! He didn't even get up to drink water! We thought he was gonna die, but he pulled through!

Dang Pat, I'm suprised PETA didn't through a fit about that.

My wife uses surgical gloves while cutting up the different peppers we put into our salsa.  It only took her a couple of peppers  ;D , from our first time making salsa, to figure out she should wear gloves.

When my wife and I were in high school, we were working at a football game at the nacho stand.  She started eating the pickled japs, and I warned her to knock it off or she would be sorry in the morning.  A gallon of ice creamed wouldn't have helped her with the burn the next morning!!  Man was she hurting!!! >:D
