Athlon Sports Names Sun Devils No. 24 in Preseason Top 25

Junior tight end Zach Miller named second-team All-American.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Athlon Sports, a publisher of America's Premier Sports Annuals, named Arizona State No. 24 in its College Football Preseason Top 25. Arizona State is predicted to finish fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference. Last year the Sun Devils finished 7-5 including a 45-40 win over Rutgers in the Insight Bowl. The Sun Devils tied for fourth in the Pac-10.

Junior tight end Zach Miller is named Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-Pac-10. Miller has also been honored in the preseason as a 2006 Playboy All-American. As a freshman, he was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year as well as Second-Team All-American and First-Team Freshman All-American. Although injured for part of his sophomore campaign, he still managed have the third-highest receptions with 38 and four touchdowns. He totaled 476 receiving yards and averaged 12.5 yards per reception.

Also named First-Team All-Pac-10 are senior quarterback Sam Keller, safety Zach Catanese and offensive linemen Andrew Carnahan and Brandon Rodd. Keller threw for 2,165 yards on 155-of-264 and averaged 270.6 yards a game before having to sit out half the season due to an injury. He had a span of 131 consecutive passing attempts without an interception. Senior Catanese finished second on the team with 107 tackles including three tackles for a loss and two sacks. He also had one interception, four passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He earned honorable mention as an All-Pac-10 selection. Senior Carnahan earned honorable mention on the All-Pac-10 team and Academic All-Pac-10 team in his junior season. He started and played in nine games. Junior Rodd was the only Sun Devil lineman to start all 12 games in 2005. He was also named honorable mention All-Pac-10.
 


   

Running back Keegan Herring and defensive lineman Michael Marquardt are both named to Second-Team All-Pac-10. As a freshman, Herring played in all 12 games and set the ASU freshman rushing record with 870 yards. This also placed him 10th in the nation among all true freshman rushers. Herring was named an honorable mention for Freshman All-American by Sporting Times. Marquardt transferred from Brigham Young University last fall and has put on nearly 30 pounds since arriving in Tempe. Prior to coming to ASU, Marquardt was credited with 16 tackles including five tackles for a loss and three sacks during his 21-game career at BYU.

Wide receiver Terry Richardson, offensive lineman Stephen Berg and defensive lineman Tranell Morant made Third-Team All-Pac-10. In his junior season, Richardson was selected as a Second-Team All-American by SI.com and was a First-Team All-Pac-10 selection. He caught 37 passes for 495 yards and five touchdowns. Also valuable on special teams, he returned two punt returns for touchdowns and averaged 15.3 yards per return putting him at seventh in the nation and second in the Pac-10. Berg has started 22 of 27 games at ASU including 11 in his junior season. Morant, a transfer from University of Florida, had 12 tackles as a reserve defensive end for the Gators in 2004.

The Athlon Sports Magazine will hit newsstands June 5. The Pac-10 edition will feature quarterbacks Sam Keller and Rudy Carpenter on the cover. ASU opens its season at home against Northern Arizona University on August 31.
