Looks like we got another ASU "lets alter the facts to fit our prospective" Sun Devil apologist in the house. Apparently the kool-aid runs thick in the Valley. Read it again Sparky (no pun intended). They are bashing the spork on the helmet as a symbol they don't like, not because Sparky got schmucked (which tended to happen quite frequently throughout the athletic department). They apparently didn't think that Sparky needed changing, but don't like the new symbol. Let's face it, if ASU hadn't been such a loser of a program for the last decade they wouldn't have had to give ASU a new look. To be honest with you, when I saw ASU ranked between UTEP and Kent state I assumed it was either the average weight of it's co-ed's (the over/under being 215) or the earning potential of it's graduates. Sparky became synonymous with mediocrity and a symbol of a program that has since lost it's relevance in D1 sports (assuming it had any to begin with). Nice try though. Fear The Spork Sun Devil, however i'm not quite sure why...!
Hey $hittyKitty, did you read the article: Here's the ASU quote verbatim:
"Now, we're not huge mascot guys. But Sparky the Sun Devil seemed to have special place in Arizona State athletics, especially with his prominent spot on the football team's helmets. Instead, the school's new Nike-designed uniforms feature just a pitchfork on the players' lids with the new "Fear the Fork" campaign. The rest of the uniforms are infused with more Swoosh, but aren't much different otherwise. So, why go out of your way to bury Sparky? We're sure recruits will love them like they do Oregon's, but they get a big thumbs down from us."
