Hey all, details to be posted soon, just wanted to announce that we have locked down this event.
This will be our First Event of the 2011 BBQ Season, it will also be our first event with our new Sanctioning Body.
Dates are January 28th & 29th, 2011. (Friday & Saturday)
Since it's the week before Superbowl, instead of Best Booth, we will go with best Tailgating Setup. More details on this soon.
Hope to see you all out at this great event, stay tuned for more details...
-
Any updates yet?
-
Entry forms will be up soon.
Entry fee will be $300.
Early bird is January 1st. All teams that get their entry forms in by then will be entered into a drawing to win back their entry fee at the event.
Prize fund will be $10,000
Sanctioning will be our new Barbeque Championship Series (BCS)
Teams will be responsible for their own Electric.
This will be a 4 Meat plus Best Tailgate Experience. 4 meats will be Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork & Brisket
Best Tailgate Experience will include decorating your booth as if you were out at your favorite team's tailgate. Judges will be coming by to taste your best Tailgate fare along with judging your Booth setup and your team spirit, so make them good..
-
Is there an Early Bird Discount?
-
The Early Bird Incentive for this event is that the teams that sign up before January 1st will be entered into a drawing for one of them to get their entire entry fee back.
We are always trying new things and the last time we did this, it was received very well..
-
Mike
Wheres the entry forms??
-
They should be up in the next day or so..
-
Hi Mike,
Do you have any of the rules set yet? For example, the turn-in boxes were still being discussed the last time I heard.
Thanks, Benny
-
Benny, the rules & such probably won't be decided until about 2 weeks before the event.
We are going to be putting together the advisory board next week for the first time to start developing them.
-
Mike...Is the payout schedule available yet?
-
I'll have it up later, I would imagine it would be the same as the past $10K events we have had..
-
Got the prize payout posted. You can see it by visiting http://www.azbarbeque.com/forums/index.php?topic=8948.0
What teams are planning on competing out at this event?
Remember, get your entries in before January 1st and be entered into a drawing for one team to get their entire Entry Fee Back... ;)
We will also draw a few other names for some additional prizes for other teams that enter early as well.
-
Mike, So where is this event held? I am unfamiliar with Rock Springs Cafe... Also, who is the promoter, and what are the vendor restrictions? Can I bring my food cart and sell Pulled Pork Sammies, etc. Stall Fees, etc.?
-
Address is:
35769 South Old Black Canyon Hwy
Rock Springs, AZ, 86324
Basically, NORTH on I-17, past Anthem & New River. It's right off the Freeway..
Obviously, since it's at Rock Springs Cafe, they do NOT want other food vendor's there. They are trying to promote their restaurant and the fact that they also sell BBQ in addition to their pies.
They are trying to get well known for their BBQ as they are for their Pies...
-
Major Woody's is in. Registration out tomorrow!
-
Count Route 66 Catering in. I am on the road but will try to get the entry in for the early bird when I get to a computer and can download. They should make a printer for phones.
-
Sloppy Dad's is there for sure.
-
Krissy should be sending in her entry this week.
-

-
Kids Q is just Chicken at this one..
-

My thoughts exactly... Maybe change it to the Soda Pops... LOL
-
Root beer comes in kegs...dunnit?
-
I knew that would draw some attn:LOL I will be there and so will the BEER
-
Swimmin in smoke will be there. Check is ready to mail tomorrow.
-
Mike
Is there peoples choice??
-
Yes, there will be people's choice. Hopefully it's better than the last time when we didn't have any public out there due to construction & the weather.
We are going to be putting out another incentive for the teams as well. Which ever team brings out the most public will win back their entry fee as well. Just trying to figure out how to regulate that...
-
I'm hoping B!tchin K!tchen!! can attend. Should know within the next week or so if I can get that weekend off!!
-
Sure, the kitchen shows up to win it all!!!! ;)

seeing everyone again.
-
Golden Ticket is in... Just me and Jessica (i think). I may be flying solo depending on school events for the kids. That would make it interesting. Check is in the mail tomorrow. Thank you guys for putting on these great events!
Also, what is the rule of garnishes? Is it KCBS style?
-
Baring any vending event that weekend you can count on us as judges Mike, gotta support the home team right?! This time I've GOT to pick a better chair though. ::)
-
for those of you wondering where you can get power from, i should be brining my 6500 watt generator. It is loud though. If you are set up near me you are welcome to plug in. I can't run people's RV's necessarily, but It'll give a few of us lights and other accessories.
Jeremy
(Golden Ticket)
-
That's awesome Jeremy. We are still working on getting a generator donated, but it has been difficult. If we do, I will post up...
-
I assume all the loud generators will be placed all together so that those with quiet generators will not lose hearing or be overdosed with carbon monoxide?!?!
-
Just wear a gas mask...lol
-
I assume all the loud generators will be placed all together so that those with quiet generators will not lose hearing or be overdosed with carbon monoxide?!?!
LOL, good idea...
-

-
For those new teams or BBQers on the fence about competing, stay tuned for a pretty cool announcement and opportunity...
-
Mke,
How big of a generator do you need? i have a 65KW Whisperwatt if you need it. I only have one cable and box with maybe 8-20 amp circuits, but if it helps call me.
-
Would love to be there but we just found out that my wife will be induced on the 28th. So we'll have a third boy joinging us at that time. Can't promise I'll be thinking about you all, cuz probably wont. :-) Good luck all. Have a blast.
-
I really want to get more involved in the BBQ scene this year. Let me know if you need a judge or a helping hand at the Rock Springs event. I can be there Friday night or anytime Saturday. Have to work during the day on Friday:-( Mike

I'd offer my place but we might be in the hospital having a baby. Last month my wife did the preiceline.com name you price deal. We got a sweet deal there. Maybe try it out. The only bad thing is that you have to pay upfront and can't cancel.
Also KCBS members get discounts at places too.
-
Any chance of getting the names of the teams posted that have paid so for if not thats ok also
-
I will be sending each team out a Conf either today or tomorrow..
-
Hey Mike, Count me in. ;D
-
Awesome, had 2 others call me today too. Puts us up to 19 or 20 now..
Very cool...

Good luck with the baby!!

I stopped out at Rock Springs today. They were pretty swamped when I was out there. Good to see them doing well.
They are all very excited about the event and they have flyers & posters up everywhere there.
I picked up a bunch and will be dropping them off around town this week.
Keep blasting out the info to all your friends, family, neighbors & co-workers. We really want to get as much public out there as we can. If you are on MySpace, Facebook or Twitter, please keep posting up about it and building it.
We appreciate everyone's support. This is going to be a great, fun event..
-
Hey Mike, Is there a link to the flyer or can you scan one and email?
-
Flyer can be found here. http://www.azbarbeque.com/forums/index.php?topic=8948.0
I also e-mailed it to you.
-
Got it ,Thanks
-
Mike

Dave
-
Got you listed for a 30 X 20 Dave..
-

-
Judge's info is at http://www.azbarbeque.com/forums/index.php?topic=8975.0
Still need Certified Judges...
-
thanks Mike sounds like this is going to be fun
-
I sure wish we could make this! May be some how we still can? Do you have a team list yet?
As always Mike you have done a great job at every contest we have been to that you have put on!
Roger
R and R BBQ Team
-
Would love to see you guys out here for it.
Not going to publish a Team list for this event, we are trying something new.
Let us know if you are able to make it... ;) Should be a great, fun event..
-
No list hard to make the odds ---
-
No team list how bout the number of teams would be great
-
We are currently at 19 teams in hand and I know of another 3 who said their's is in the mail..
-
19 teams -- I predict team # 8 is the winner
Follwoed by # 15 as runner up ---
-
Your a funny guy Jim...
-
I could totally see that being the case... ;D
-
What is the reasoning behind not having a team list?
-
Just trying something different... ;)
Is not seeing a team list holding you back from signing up? If so, Why??
-
I might have to agree with no team list. If you are going to the contest to win what the hell does it matter who is on the list. I don't remember seeing an easy list of teams in any of the contest that we went to. I say not list, show up and do your best.
Good luck to all.
Rod
-
I know for a fact that VRM is sitting this one out. Best of luck to all ya'll.
-
I have to agree with Rod, Does knowing who is going to be there make you cook any different.
I thought we were doing this because it is a passion to do so. Reallity is that some teams
look at this as much more and for them I must say " balls to the wind baby ". Personal joke.
Chuck
-
On any given weekend anyone can win. No one is a lock these days. Too many good teams out there.
-
Man Crash I heard you guys were going to be there. As for me it really doesn't matter who shows it will not effect the way we do things anyhow. So I say come one come all we are ready for ya.
-

Chuck
Ah ha ha ha! Ball to the Wind Baby!! Good times my friend!!
-
Simply wanted to know the reasoning. "Trying something new" answered my question. The reason I do not want to cook in this comp. is not because the lack of knowing the other teams competing, it's the lack of knowing the rules. This sport, hobby or passion is subjective enough.
-
The Rules will be out tomorrow, so hopefully that entices you to sign up.
They are very similar to what you are used to, if anything, much more simpler. Our group has decided to go forward with the K.I.S.S. concept. I think the majority will like it.
Hope to see you out there.. ;)
-
I really don't mind a list or not but it is cool to see a top team on the list knowing that you're going to be going up against them. Not having a list wouldn't make or break a comp for me but the timing, finances, getting time off work, and weather are the biggest reasons for me to not do a comp.
-

I have to agree with you, Scott, I enjoy seeing big names and quality cooks at competitions to validate my abilities. It is better to look at the scores and see I am only X-points behind some of the best even when in last place but can then can concentrate on how to be better while learning what the Judges expect. The hardest thing with the competitions is the timing, I spend most of my time not working in the catering business as most of my work is on Fridays, Saturdays and an occasional Sunday. Sad to say, the only time I work is when Competitions are happening, Friday and Saturday! Finances is another motivator as it is not a very profitable hobby but fun when I can afford it.
Speaking of Rules, Is it tomorrow yet?
-
It is, I will post them up later today...
-
Ah ha ha ha! Ball to the Wind Baby!! Good times my friend!!
Is "balls to the Wind Baby" part of the new rules. Turn in's can get interesting I am sure.
Well, it has been too long and even though we have a ton going on that weekend, we are bring the FEC out of retirement. The last two guys to cook on my FEC was Scottie Johnson and Todd Johns, I hope they left some secrets in there.
-
Awesome David, look forward to seeing you guys out there..
-
"Balls to the wind" It is a term we use when we are with good friends, having a great time. 8)
-
For those teams that were waiting for the rules to be posted, are you sending in your registration forms now??
You can view the rules by visiting http://www.azbarbeque.com/forums/index.php?topic=9075.0
Hope to see a few more of you out here.
$10,000 prize fund... Double what we had last time. Surprised we don't have more of you coming out. It's been a 2 month layoff, time to get back into it..
-
I don't know it it's been asked but do we have access to water or do we need to bring it all with us?
-
I'd look for a spot upwind, myself. The second day, there might be some ripe balls...
-
Last year we had access to water.
-
There will be access to water for teams. RV's that need to fill up need to do so before arriving..
-
Weare stil pleating with our wives if we can come. If we behave over the weekend we have a good shot at coming!
We are so fired up to come to Az for another contest! We have the best time!
See YA! I hope!!
-
As of now the BBQ Gods have our back. Extended forcast for Rock Springs is...
Jan 28 Friday
Abundant sunshine. Highs in the mid 70s and lows in the upper 40s.
Jan 29 Saturday
Sunshine. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the mid 40s.
And what would Rock Springs be without some wind...... ONLY 4 MPH. O% chance of rain.
NO excuse not to be there.
-
No wind would be good. I am still finding dust from the last comp!
-
I'm holding you to it Harpo, if we're gonna be there I want warm and no wind storm this time!!!!! :D ;)
-
I'm holding you to it Harpo, if we're gonna be there I want warm and no wind storm this time!!!!! :D ;)
Take it for what it's worth. The weather forcasters only have to be right 10% of the time to keep there jobs!!!! >:D
-
I heard the limit has been reached and no more teams are allowed? >:(
-
Just about.. If we get the R&R entry & I.A.B. 30 in, that puts us at 25 BBQ Teams and 2 Teams coming just for the Tailgate portion.
This is shaping up to be a great event..
-
Mike,
What time is check in? Let me restate that... What time can I show up?
-
Nevermind... I just found the info thread... DUH!
-
LOL, why do I even bother putting that out there and e-mailing it to all the competitors... LOL
-
Isnt there enough wind at these contest to go around? See ya guys! And you need to make up for me being sick in Sun City on my Birthday! Make Up Party! Ready or Not!

-
Congrats to Whiskey Ranch and all who walked
-
How many teams ended up competing, did we get 25? Will BCS typically list 1-all results?
-
It was a really nice weekend...pretty weather, still cold at night. Thankfully, we didn't get a chance to enjoy the wind everyone experienced last year.
I gotta say...we were shocked at where we placed :o Was hoping for middle of the pack.
-
Great Job Tommy and IAB30.............and look at Trailhound!! They took a small beatin in Wildomar and came strong in Rock Springs. Congrats to all.......
Thanks AZWildcat.
You know Wildomar was our 2nd comp and we was happy with a 36 overall, but Rock Springs OMG where did this one come from.

Carpe 'Que,

Congratulations to Tommy and the team for their first GC and for the use of their electricity as well as their foam pads. It made the van a comfortable place for the wife and me. Also a big congrats to the IAB30 team for their RGC. Thank you to Mike for putting on the event at such a great site. The folks at Rock Springs Cafe were some of most friendly I've encountered. Their pies are great as advertised.
Also a big thanks to Nancy and everyone involved in the new BCS organization. If this first ever event is any indication, there will be many more successful contests in AZ and the surrounding states soon.
Thanks to all the judges who came out.
Special thanks to Harry Soo for his faith in me and Shari.
Benny
-
Congrats to Tommy for that first GC!!!
Congrats to Tom and IAB30 for that first RGC!!!
Sounds like a good time by all.

Congratulation to My friend Tommy for a great first GC and to Tom from IAB 30 I'm sure Dan was the secret weapon on this one. Also to McFrankenboo for there 1st in the Tailgate.
And now to the BCS group wow you guys are doing it right. Great job and the Awards started just as published. I love the 45 minute turn in also. Very well run contest from our point of view.

Looking forward to next year already.
